MAY 1993 COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS
In May 1993 the Conservatives suffered one of their worst County
Council election performances, losing a large number of councils
to no overall control or to the Liberal Democrats.
The election transformed the British local election situation:
after it, the Tories controlled just 15 out of the 127 largest
councils in Britain. The Liberal Democrats were jubilant;
although their share of the vote was actually lower than the
Alliance had managed 8 years before, their success in
concentrating their vote in winnable seats was far greater. Over
large parts of Southern England they had become the dominant
party in terms of local council seats won. For the Labour Party,
it was a good result, but yet again they failed to transform
opinion poll support into real votes.
